GMDSS Equipment
Requirements by Sea Area
Navigating the high seas demands rigorous safety measures. The Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) sets out specific equipment requirements to ensure all vessels can communicate effectively in emergencies. Below are the mandatory equipment setups for different sea areas as specified by Tototheo Global.
Sea Area A1
- VHF with DSC (Digital Selective Calling)
- DSC Watch Receiver (Channel 70)
- NAVTEX Receiver (518 kHz)
- EGC Receiver
- Float-Free Satellite EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon)
- Radar Transponder (SART) (2 sets for cargo ships of 500 gt and upwards and passenger ships; 1 set for cargo ships between 300 and 500 gt)
- Hand-held GMDSS VHF Transceivers (3 sets)
Sea Area A2
- Includes all equipment required in Sea Area A1, plus:
- MF Telephony with MF DSC (Digital Selective Calling)
- Sea Area A3 (Inmarsat Solution)
- Includes all equipment required in Sea Area A1, plus:
- Inmarsat Ship Earth Station with EGC receiver
- Duplicated VHF with DSC
- Duplicated Inmarsat SES (Ship Earth Station)
Sea Area A3 (HF Solution)
- Includes all equipment required in Sea Area A1, plus:
- MF/HF Telephony with DSC and NBDP (Narrow Band Direct Printing)
- DSC Watch Receiver MF/HF
- Duplicated VHF with DSC
- Duplicated MF/HF Telephony with DSC and NBDP
Sea Area A4
- Note: Inmarsat-E EPIRB cannot be utilized in Sea Area A4.
- Includes all equipment required in Sea Area A3 (HF Solution), plus:
- NAVTEX Receiver must cover different frequencies due to lack of NAVTEX coverage.
Important Notes:
Cargo Ships between 300 and 500 GT: Require 1 SART and 2 Hand-held VHF sets. Cargo Ships of 500 GT and Upwards and Passenger Ships: Require 2 SART and 3 Hand-held VHF sets.
